St. Thomas More College
L’Arche Canada Experience
In partnership with Intercordia Canada, St. Thomas More College provides up to 10 students with a 12-week in-country community service-learning experience. Students gain credit in Religious Studies 284.3 and 298.3 while living with a L’Arche home in a Canadian community.
In the winter term, students take RLST 284.3: Religion and Non-Violence at St. Thomas More College while participating in four predeparture seminars before going to their placement in a Canadian city. Through the class and predeparture seminars, students prepare themselves intellectually, emotionally, and mentally for their service-learning experience. Students will also participate in the Saskatoon L’Arche community in order to gain experience with L’Arche and its philosophies.
In the spring term, students take RLST 298.3: Becoming Human in a Violent World while living in a L’Arche home in a Canadian community. Students will live with adults with developmental disabilities in a supportive environment in which they can learn about the practical and spiritual aspects of acceptance and belonging. Students write reflection pieces about their experiences while in their host community, and complete a meta-reflection upon their return home.
