St. Thomas More College
Intercordia Program
In partnership with Intercordia Canada, St. Thomas More College provides up to 14 students with an 8-week international community service-learning experience. Students gain credit in Sociology 260.3 and 261.3 while living with and learning from people throughout the world. In the summer of 2013, students will be travelling to Ecuador and Honduras.
In the winter term, students take SOC 260.3: Social Change and Global Solidarity at St. Thomas More College, while participating in four predeparture seminars before going to their placements in Ecuador or Honduras. Through the class and predeparture seminars, students prepare themselves intellectually, emotionally, and philosophically for their study abroad experience.
In the spring term, students take SOC 261.3: Engaging Social Change and Global Solidarity while living abroad with a host family and working with a community partner in the Global South. In the past, students have worked in daycares, hospitals, schools, group homes, youth centres, and on cooperative farms. Students write reflection pieces about their experiences while in their host country, and complete a meta-reflection upon their return to Canada.
The St. Thomas More Intercordia Program costs $5,175 per student. Students contribute $1,000 of their own money to the Intercordia program, and St. Thomas More College awards each accepted student a $2,300 scholarship to offset the cost of the program. St. Thomas More Intercordia students fundraise the remaining costs ($1,875 each) as a group through letter-writing campaigns and fundraising drives.
