Frequently Asked Questions
Q1. What was the purchase price of Ogle Hall?
A. $950,000
Q2. What is the university planning to do with the building?A. Ownership does not transfer to the university until summer 2011. For the 2010-11 academic year, STM will continue to operate Ogle Hall as a residence, ensuring no students are left without a home. The new undergraduate student residence project in College Quarter (near Cumberland and 14th Street) is scheduled for completion in fall 2011, which will open up 400 new beds on campus. The university will evaluate a number of options for Ogle Hall beyond 2011.
Q3. Will the loss of a campus residence affect students?
A. No. Ogle Hall is a small residence of only about 50 beds. The possession date in 2011 will coincide with the scheduled completion date of the undergraduate student residence in College Quarter, which will have space for 400 students. For 2010-11, Ogle Hall will continue to operate as a residence, so students who have space reserved for next year will not be affected.
Q4. Are other U of S residences open to STM students?
A. Yes. All residences on campus are open to both U of S and STM students. Visit www.usask.ca/residence for more information.
Q5. What is the possession date?
A. The targeted date of transfer is June 30, 2011.
Q6. Why did STM decide to sell Ogle Hall?
A. In 2007, STM decided to shift its focus away from administering a university residence and towards activities that more directly support its Catholic mission.
Q7. What will STM do with the proceeds from the sale?
A. STM will use the proceeds to support the Catholic mission of the college, including advancing its emerging Catholic Studies program.
Q8. Who approved the sale of Ogle Hall?
A. The transaction has been approved by the STM College Board of Governors, the U of S Board of Governors, and the provincial cabinet. The provincial cabinet must approve any purchase of real estate over $500,000 by the university.
Q9. Is St. Thomas More College part of the university?
A. Yes. STM is federated with the U of S - it is governed and administered independently, but is academically linked (i.e. STM students graduate with U of S degrees). Education is not the piling on of learning, information, data, facts, skills, or abilities - that's training or instruction - but is rather making visible what is hidden as a seed.
