About PCUH

FOLK! ukrainian dance documentary

PCUH proudly presents an exclusive premiere screening of the Ukrainian dance documentary

FOLK!

FOLK! is about the unique, underground and acrobatic world of Ukrainian folk dancing. An often funny peek at what it's like to grow up in a Ukrainian-American community, the documentary is relevant to anyone trying to balance ties to one's heritage and culture in a culturally homogenizing world.

Shot over the course of several years, the film follows narrator/filmmaker Roxy Toporowych on her journey of Ukrainian dance, and features the legendary ballerina and choreographer Roma Pryma Bohachevsky.

The film incudes footage of several dance companies throughout the US and Ukraine, mainly the Syzokryli Dance Ensemble in New York, the Virsky Dance Ensemble of Ukraine, the Kashtan School in Cleveland and the Voloshky Dance Ensemble of Philadelphia.

FOLK! has had a life of its own since completion. It was a part of the Kinolev Film Festival in Lviv in 2008, White Sands International Film Festival 2009, Paducah Film Festival, and was featured as part of the Harriman Jewel Performing Arts Series in Kansas City, MO.

It screened at Columbia University as part of its Ukrainian Film Club, and at Rice University in Houston, Texas, and is now touring select Canadian cities, of which Saskatoon is one!

Director Roxy Toporowych and FOLK! were selected as part of the NewFilmmakers Festival Series at Anthology Film Archives in December of 2009.

Tickets: $10, available at the door only

Director Roxy Toporowych will be present at this screening, and will take part in an interesting panel discussion after the film.
