Dr. Ken Smith Appointed Acting President of St. Thomas More College

The Board of Governors of St. Thomas More College has appointed Dr. Ken Smith to the position of Acting President, effective October 1, 2010. Dr Smith's appointment comes after current STM President Fr. George Smith, CSB, was elected Superior General of the Congregation of St. Basil (Basilian Fathers) in July.

Dr. Smith graduated from The Johns Hopkins University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Economy. He went on to complete a Masters and PhD in Business Administration from the University of Rochester and Georgia State University, respectively.

In 1968, Dr. Smith came to the University of Saskatchewan to teach Marketing and Management in the Edwards School of Business (formerly the College of Commerce). From 1983-86, he served as the College's Associate Dean, and subsequently became the University's Registrar, a position he held until his retirement in 2002.

In addition to his professional work, Dr. Smith has been an engaged and active community member. He has served on various community boards, including the Saskatoon Chamber of Commerce (President 1987-88); the Saskatoon Roman Catholic Diocesan Finance Committee (Chair, 1997 -2001), the Saskatoon Riverside Rotary Club (President, 1995-96), and the Jubilee Residences Inc. (2004 - Present), which  provides lodges, affordable housing, and long-term care services to older adults in the Saskatoon area.

Dr. Smith has also faithful and actively served the St. Thomas More College Community. He was a member of the College's Corporation from 2000-2007 and a member of its Board of Governors from 2001-2007. He served as Chair of the Board from 2002 - 2006. In 2008, Dr. Smith was presented with the St. Thomas More Medal in recognition of the care, integrity and faith that characterize his many contributions to community and public life.

St. Thomas More College is the Catholic liberal arts college federated with the University of Saskatchewan.
