A recent transplant to Saskatoon, Jessica Shurr has previously lived in Chicago, Minneapolis, and Indiana. For the last thirteen years, she has created oil paintings to narrate everyday moments of life, as well as stories that have been passed down for centuries to form cultures and change lives.
Her focus on story and storytelling sheds light on a selection of biblical stories and themes that have impacted the artist personally and that she wishes to depict in a different light. In addition, her daily life as a mother, an artist, and a new resident of the prairies has provided her with a rich resource of stories for her work. Her bold use of color and simple composition make an immediate impact on the viewer, while the juxtaposition of elements or the point of view cause one to look more closely and reconsider the story. Soaked with spiritual depth and everyday insight, her paintings form a narrative that is both personal and universal.
God has created me to do Him some definite service. He has committed some work to me which He has not committed to another. I have my mission. I am a link in a chain, a bond of connection between persons. He has not created me for nothing. John Henry Cardinal Newman |
