Spring Session in Ukraine: Ukrainian Language Immersion Program

The Spring Session in Ukraine is conceived as an intensive language program coordinated jointly by St. Thomas More College (STM) and the University of Saskatchewan (U of S).  The program is offered overseas in Ternopil, Ukraine in co-operation with a partner institution, Ternopil National Pedagogical Unversity.

Courses

Language instruction will be offered at all three levels: Elementary (UKR 114.3, and 117.3), Intermediate (UKR 214.3 and 217.3), and Advanced (UKR 314.3 and 317.3).  The courses offered are University of Saskatchewan credit courses. All courses are taught by instructors accredited at the University of Saskatchewan. Courses may be taken for university credit or audited.  All students are required to take placement tests at the start of the program. Students taking courses for university credit at the Intermediate or Advanced level will have successfully completed the required sequence of courses in preparation for the next level.

Format

The 2010 Spring Language Immersion Program will run in two consecutive sessions for a duration of 6 weeks, May 12 to June 25. During this time, students may earn up to 6 university credits. Individual language tutoring is provided and constitutes part of the course requirement.

Accommodations will be organized with host families. The homestay program is designed to immerse the student in the daily life of a Ukrainian family while helping to facilitate language acquisition.

Depending on the level of group interest and participation, local excursions may be organized

Costs

The cost of course tuition is $902.28 for 6 credit units ($451.14 per 3 credit unit). Rates are quoted as of September 1, 2008 and are subject to change. In addition to tuition, the program fee, which covers the cost of administration, use of partner classroom and computer facilities, individual tutoring, room, board, university meals, and airport transportation, is approximately $1690.00 CDN. This fee may be reduced slightly depending on the number of enrolments The program fee DOES NOT include airfare, medical insurance, course reading material, incidental expenses, or organized excursions. University of Saskatchewan students are eligible for travel bursaries through the Global Commons (Lower Place Riel). It is also intended that a limited number of stipends and/or scholarships will be made available on the basis of merit and academic achievement. Partner Institution

Ternopil National Pedagogical University (TNPU) is a leading centre of higher education in Western Ukraine. It ranks among the Ukraine's three best pedagogical universities. TNPU incorporates 13 schools and 48 departments. The university employs approximately 400 lecturers and researchers and more than 7,000 students annually enrol in the university.
